YEREVAN. - In the issues of defense and security, Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh first of all rely on their own forces, Armenian Deputy FM Shavarsh Kocharyan said in an interview with German newspaper Die Tagespost, responding to Russia's role in defending Armenia and arming Azerbaijan.

"At the same time, Armenia considers the deepening of relations with countries and organizations as a deterring factor against the violation of stability in the region. The military and political cooperation with Russia serves the same purpose. Russia traditionally sees the South Caucasus as a zone of its influence and is trying to run balanced policy in line with its interests," the Deputy FM noted, recalling that Russia is also an OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair.

In this context, Shavarsh Kocharyan stressed Russia's participation in signing the ceasefire agreement of 1994. The agreement was violated this April, the agreement to cease fire again being reached with Russia's support, he said.

In the Deputy FM's words, Europe can make its contribution by disallowing Azerbaijan to depart from the arrangements reached in Vienna on May 16, which propose introduction of incident investigation mechanisms.
