YEREVAN. - Eliminating corruption at all levels and being very vigilant about following up to that is important for any country, including Armenia, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of European and Eurasian Affairs, Bridget Brink said in an interview with Aysor.am and Armenia TV Monday.

Responding to the question on whether the launch of the fight against corruption in Armenia would have an impact on the US-Armenian trade relationship and whether she believes in that, Ms. Brinck noted:

“I definitely believe in it. It’ s something that we are working in many countries in the region to try to help eliminate corruption. It has in effect a distorting effect on countries by making businesses less willing to take risks because the risk is higher. It also introduces elements of influence which are not necessarily the ones that are the elected officials, including the outside elements that can undermine independence and sovereignty. So, from our perspective, -  and I can say I talked about this very openly in Moldova, Ukraine, in other part of the region - it’s very corrosive to the economic developments. So, eliminating corruption at all levels and being very vigilant about following up to that is important.

According to the Deputy Assistant Secretary, this is an issue they also face in America and in every country, so “Armenia has to keep at it”. “And the resolution to that has a great potential to Armenia’s economic growth and strength because it could open up pathways – both geographic pathways, and other connections, which could help build this whole region,” she concluded.
