YEREVAN. – The entire aviation market of Armenia has been given to Russia.

Shahen Petrosyan, former head of the Armenian government-affiliated General Department of Civil Aviation, stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

In his words, the reason is in the “open skies” policy of Armenia.

“It’s a bluff, there is no such thing,” said Petrosyan. “The ‘open skies’ policy is always multilateral, or at least bilateral, but not unilateral.”

The expert added that Armenia needs to have its own airline.

“We [i.e. Armenia] certainly have the opportunity to have a national air carrier,” stated the former official. “Perhaps the [respective] word should be about a state monopoly, since it’s a risky business; no private company will take such a risk.”

He expressed a view that the Armenian government should be the initiator in this regard, and that US$50 million needs to be invested and form a strong airline in Armenia.

“I don’t know what is the reason that the [Armenian] state isn’t taking that step; perhaps the Russian side has forced [this],” added Shahen Petrosyan. “I have no [such] evidence, but the logic of events attests to this.”
