YEREVAN. – Arman Tatoyan, Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) of Armenia, on Wednesday met in Geneva, Switzerland, with Patrice Gillibert, Secretary of the United Nations Committee Against Torture (UN CAT).

The ombudsman’s office informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that Tatoyan expressed willingness to actively collaborate with the CAT as well as the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The interlocutors stressed the need increase the capacity of the institution of the Human Rights Defender, and to further strengthen its guarantees for independence.

They underscored the necessity for the Ombudsman’s active participation in the CAT meetings, and in the compiling of its reports.

Tatoyan and Gillibert also discussed the avenues for the prevention of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in the detention centers of Armenia.
