Ecologists found out that the ozone hole over Antarctica in the period since 2000, when it reached its maximum size, has reduced, Lenta reported quoting journal Science.

The ozone hole area has decreased by four million square kilometers. Despite this, in 2015, scientists observed the biggest ozone hole over Antarctica. According to the scientists, this happened due to the eruption of  volcano Calbuco in Chile.

Emission of a large number of small particles into the stratosphere contributed to the growth in the number and size of polar clouds, with which man-made chlorine interacts. Scientists came to such conclusions by generalizing the data of observation that were conducted over the last 15 years using satellite and atmospheric probes on the balloons.

Scientists claim that it demonstrates gradual recovery of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. Ecologists stated that the reason of this is observance of the Montreal protocol signed in 1987 and urging to reduce emissions in the atmosphere of the lowest chlorfluorocarbons.

The ozone layer in the polar latitudes is located at an altitude of 10-15 kilometers from the surface of the planet. It is characterized by the high concentration of ozone generated by ultraviolet radiation from molecular oxygen. The ozone layer protects the earth organisms from exposure to hard ultraviolet.
