The issue of holding a referendum on banning same-sex marriages will be re-submitted to the Central Election Commission, one of the initiators of the vote Sandro Bregadze stated.

According to him, the initiative group collected 200,000 signatures under the petition whether they agree that marriage is a union between a man and a woman to create a family, Georgia On-line reported.

Sandro Bregadze stated that the certification process is now underway. At the end of this week, the signatures will be submitted to the Central Election Commission and they hope that the CEC will recheck all this soon, and this question will be sent the president of Georgia.

He is confident that by the time they will have more than half a million signatures demanding to call a referendum.

Bregadze said that if the president goes against the Georgian population, then they will be forced to demand his resignation.

The initiative group has already tried to bring issue of banning same-sex marriage in Georgia to the CEC. In May, the commission refused to register the issue of non-compliance of wordings with the law.

This subject became actual at the end of January after the  defender of the rights of LGBT persons, the lawyer Giorgi Tatishvili made a claim to the Constitutional Court of Georgia demanding the legalization of the same-sex marriage. He proved the claim by saying there is no indications in the Constitution that amarriage is the union between a man and a woman, but it is stated in the Civil Code.

After this part of the Georgian MPs launched an initiative to amend the relevant record in the Constitution of Georgia. The amendments have not been adopted due to the lack of enough supporters.

The Georgian Orthodox Church opposes same-sex marriages and in the end of May the Holy Synod of Georgia made some amendments to the document about same-sex sexual relations.
