YEREVAN. – From the viewpoint of Iran’s plans to link the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea, Turkey lost its positions after the coup attempt, and instead, Armenia’s respective positions strengthened.

Iranian Studies specialist, analyst on regional issues Vardan Voskanyan, stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Monday.

“Armenia remains a key importance for Iran, in terms of implementing its plans,” said the analyst. “[But Turkey] was dangerous for Iranians before this [recent development in Turkey], too; they were having a cargo transportation problem in Turkey. (…) and implementing large-scale projects there contains a large element of risk for all players.”

In Voskanyan’s words, Turkey can be described hereinafter as a “perilous” country.

“No one can rule out that such incidents will not repeat [in Turkey], and that a mad general would not order to cross the Armenian-Turkish border, the Turkish-Greek, [and] the Turkish-Iranian border,” added the Iranian Studies specialist.

A group of military servicemen attempted a coup in Turkey, from late night on July 15 to early morning on July 16, but it failed.

More than 260 people died during the ensuing clashes.
