If Turkey re-introduces capital punishment, negotiations on the county’s accession to the EU will be halted, Italian FM Paolo Gentiloni stated.

“It is obvious that there won't be any possibility to continue any negotiation process with the country, which would have reintroduced the capital punishment, as EU values prescribe the abolition of the death penalty among other things,” Gentiloni told Radio Anch'io broadcaster.

Last Friday Turkish authorities announced the coup attempt in the country.  Already on Saturday morning rebellious militaries began to give up. Turkish authorities stated later that the coup attempt has failed.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, as a result of the coup 290 people were killed. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced possibility of parliament’s considering the death penalty for participants of the attempted coup in the country, Sputnik News reported.
