President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Saint Petersburg on August 9, Deputy PM Mehmet Sumsejk said during his meeting with Russian counterpart Arkady Dvorkovich.

Deputy PM said the countries need to normalize bilateral relations as soon as possible. In turn, Russian official said that Turkey’s apology for the shot down plane have created a background for restoration of Ankara-Moscow ties, RIA Novosti reported.

Earlier in June, Erdogan apologized for the downed plane and the death of the Russian pilot.

Erdogan’s visit comes amid a coup attempt in Turkey. Pilots who downed the Russian warplane appeared to be among the suspects in coup. Both pilots have been arrested.
