YEREVAN. – Armenia’s national security service said the criminal behavior of an armed group seizing police regiment is becoming more dangerous and is beyond the limits when restraint was displayed.

“Members of the armed group seizing the territory of the Armenian Police Regiment, in response to the numerous calls not to commit new crimes, have continued attacks on the lives and health of employees of law enforcement bodies, as well as destruction of property. On the night of July 26, the chain of such actions led to a shootout resulting in casualties,” the statement reads.

Therefore, to prevent a new crime, the service will now be forced to take drastic measures.

“Being well informed about the intentions of the criminal group and planned criminal activities, be warned: all threats to life and health will be immediately neutralized by reciprocal lawful actions. Menacing and provocative actions of the members of the group is also confirmed by a record received in compliance with the law,” the statement reads.

A group of armed men stormed into a Yerevan police patrol regiment, on early morning on July 17, and took several police officers hostage. Deputy regiment commander Artur Vanoyan was killed, and four other officers of the law plus one of the attackers were wounded during the ensuing gunfire exchange. On Saturday the hostages were released.

The gunmen demand the release of Jirair Sefilian, an imprisoned opposition activist. The supporters of the armed group continue rallies.
