The armed group which has been hiding in the territory of the police regiment in Yerevan refuses to surrender even after releasing the hostages, the French newspaper Le Point writes.

“The supporters of imprisoned opposition representative Jirair Sefilian stormed the building of the law enforcement authorities on July 17, killing a policeman and taking several people hostages. Following this, they demanded the resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan. According to the police, the law enforcement authorities threw from a helicopter a statement proposing to surrender. Last week 1,5 thousand people gathered in Yerevan to protest against the government and demand peaceful resolution of the crisis. The police fired tear gas and used stun grenades, arresting dozens of people. Jirair Sefilian, arrested in June for possession of weapons, is accused of the intention to seize state buildings and communication centers in Yerevan.  Sefilian, violent critic of the authorities, was already once arrested for 18 months in 2006 after urging to change the power by force.  He was also arrested for a short time for the attempt of coup d’état in 2015,” the newspaper writes.
