Pope Francis paid an emotional visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum, the site of a Nazi concentration and extermination camp during his visit to Poland.

As Vatican Radio reported, the pontiff was on foot, occasionally was driven in an electric car, prayed long at the place of execution of prisoners, touched and kissed beam of the building, remembering the terrible injustice of the XX century.

Near the entrance to the area of the shooting, the Holy Father met and warmly welcomed each of the ten former inmates of extermination camps.

The Pope was then driven to the notorious block 11, also known as the death block where Franciscan priest, Fr Maximillian Kolbe was killed after offering up his life for a complete stranger 75 years ago.

Leaving this extermination camp, Pope Francis left memorable entry in the memorial book, and also presented an icon lamp which will remain in Auschwitz.
