YEREVAN. - No Armenian politician, including President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, can surrender any territories in the Karabakh issue, political analyst and Orientalist Karine Gevorgyan told Armenian News -  NEWS.am.

In her words, other developments will simply become a crash and a political death and are thus unreal.  “The illusion of a certain political advantage, which has emerged in the expert community of Azerbaijan after the April war, is a rather dangerous one, since the processes which are generally going on in the region are such that part of the ISIS fighters actually has its place in Azerbaijan.  But considering that currently at least 60 percent of the Azerbaijani population are Shiahs – the worst enemies of ISIS fighters, which should be killed – I can’t imagine what will happen,” Gevorgyan noted.

For unknown reasons some people in Armenia call the hearsay on the possible surrender of lands in Karabakh “Lavrov’s plan”, she said.   “It is not fully clear how can [Russian FM Sergey] Lavrov discuss something and do that outside the OSCE Minsk Group framework. That is simply impossible. Therefore, this is merely hearsay. Of course, Lavrov can propose something, but the decision cannot be up to Russia in this case. The Minsk Group will take decisions collegially,” Gevorgyan noted.

Nagorno-Karabakh, the analyst stressed, will under no circumstance hand those territories and will struggle for them. “Mess will begin. Perhaps this will be beneficial for someone, even to those who push this process. But I see very serious threats here, including for Azerbaijan,” the Orientalist said.

According to her, there will be no real and qualitative progress in the situation.   “The presence of the conflict is beneficial to Aliyev himself, considering many insecure social protests, which exist there latently and rise from time to time,” Gevorgyan concluded.

On August 10, the meeting between the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is slated to take place. The high-level meeting will address the key issues on the bilateral agenda of cooperation between the two states. Exchange of views on the Karabakh conflict settlement is also expected to take place.
