Having appeared under the influence of populists, the European politicians cannot fully implement the agreements signed earlier with Turkey, at the same time accusing Ankara of blackmailing, Turkish FM Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Thursday.

“They (the European parties) began showing tendency for getting closer to the radical nationalist movements in order to get their support and return the votes they have been deprived of. Basically, because of populism they cannot fully implement the conditions of the signed agreements and keep their promise. Regardless of their wish, they have to join that populist policy and be subjected to its influence,” Çavuşoğlu said.

In the FM’s words, in a dialogue with EU, Ankara urges to “observe all the conditions and points of the signed agreements.”

“Specific points of the agreement shouldn’t be selectively accepted or not accepted. One should implement either everything or nothing. In response to this position of ours, they accuse us of blackmailing and intimidation. No, we don’t threaten anyone, but why sign those agreements? To implement them. Otherwise, why did we sign them? They aren’t used to such a position and are therefore dissatisfied,” Çavuşoğlu added.
