Spanish research institute Aimplas developed new biopolymers for production of biodegradable packaging which is resistant to sterilization and pasteurization, Kedem reported.

New biopolymers will be used for production of biodegradable bottles and packages which are resistant to thermal energy, and this would make the package very suitable for dairy products.

A new project called Biobottle was developed under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme, it has a budget of 1 million euros and was carried out by seven companies and technology centers in five different countries - Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium and Spain.  The main objective of the project was to create a biodegradable packaging, which will conform to certain mechanical and thermal requirements. The carried-out tests showed that the new package is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 95 degrees and does not affect the organoleptic properties of the products.
