71-year-old Alain Juppe, who on August 27 has officially stated his campaign, urged the French not to "add fuel to the fire” and stop opposing Muslims and non-Muslims, reports the RFI.

Juppe voiced that statement, after the Council of State had canceled the decision made by   Villeneuve-Loubet Mayor’s Office about banning birkinis. The right-wing politician, who according to the polls is the main favorite in the presidential elections of 2017, welcomed the decision of the State Council and in an interview with Le Figaro said that he is against situational decisions that are made under the influence of emotional debates in the media.

"Today, given the level of tension in the French society and the number of trials the French society have been subjected to, we must do our best not add fuel to fire," said Zhyuppen. He also spoke against the ban on wearing headscarves in universities, which has  recently been  urged by Sarkozy.

Allen Juppen will be the main rival of Sarkozy in the internal primaries. The right and left centrists will hold primaries on November 20 and 27 of 2016.
