As the Estonian Parliament failed to elect the Baltic country’s president in the third balloting round, new presidential elections will be held by Electoral College made up of parliamentarians as well as local representatives on September 24, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the Estonian Constitution and the Law on the Election of the President, Speaker of Parliament Eiki Nestor called the Electoral College for election of the president. The meeting will take place in Estonia Concert Hall on September 24, 2016 at 12:00, the statement of the press service says.

During three  balloting rounds deputies didn't manage to elect the head of Estonia as none of the presented candidates gained number of votes, necessary for a victory as the candidate had to earn at least two-thirds of the lawmakers’ votes to win the secret ballot in parliament, or at least 68 out of 101 votes.

During the vote, ruling coalition Reform Party and Social Democratic Party faction’s [Siim] Kallas obtained 42 votes. His rival Mailis Reps, put forward by the parliamentary faction of the opposition Centre Party, received 26 votes.

Now the elections will continue in the Electoral College, which will include 101 members of parliament and 234 representatives of local governments, elections are held in two rounds. The candidate should receive majority of votes to win. Two participants of elections in the third round of vote Mailis Reps and Siim Kallas  will automatically become candidates.  Besides, the group of electors numbering at least 21 may also nominate a candidate.
