Georgia’s membership to NATO will certainly be unpleasant for Russia, but this will happen anyway.

Maia Panjikidze, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, stated the aforementioned before the start of the international conference, entitled “Upcoming Challenges: NATO, from Wales to Warsaw and Beyond,” which is underway Monday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

Referring to the question of Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent as to how will Russia react to Georgia’s possible accession to NATO, Panjikidze stressed:  “Russia’s reaction will not be positive, we know this. We have known this long ago. But NATO has proved that despite the fact that Russia is against the expansion of NATO, new members still keep joining it.  Therefore, I think Russia has no right of veto against NATO. And Georgia is a free country, a free country which can make its choice on its own,” she said.

In the framework of his recent visit to Tbilisi, Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg stated that Georgia has all the necessary tools and mechanisms to move towards NATO membership and that Georgia will become its member.
