Georgia has a very intensive strategic partnership with Azerbaijan and Turkey, but this has nothing common with the problems the three states have.

Maia Panjikidze, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, stated the aforementioned before the start of the international conference, entitled “Upcoming Challenges: NATO, from Wales to Warsaw and Beyond,” which is underway Monday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

“[However] This has nothing common with conflicts. Economy is the most important thing in the development of countries: it is the basis of these relations. It so happened that we launched our economic ties [with Azerbaijan] back in the times of Eduard Shevardnadze and Heydar Aliyev, and [currently] they are developing very well,” Panjikidze said.

According to the diplomat, the presence of gas pipelines with Azerbaijan and Turkey is of great significance for Georgia.

Touching on the possibilities of developing Iran-Georgia-Armenia economic cooperation,  Maia Panjikidze noted that the situation is changing after lifting the sanctions against Iran. “New prospects are opening. We have very good economic ties with Iran. I think that it’s all about interests, and these interests are very often related to the problems both you and we face in economic development.  One should look for different ways for the development of economy.  After the “opening” of Iran it is possible to develop a strategic plan on making these relations closer,” the ex-FM said.
