The body of Nikolay Tarankov, who is considered to be the leader of Estonia’s criminal underworld, was found in the town of Haapsalu, Lenta reports, citing ERR.

According to the source, the information on the murder was confirmed by the law enforcement authorities. “The body of Nikolay Tarankov, 63, was found at about 2:00 pm in Lyaenemaa,” the chief of the Central Criminal Police Krista Aas said. She informed that Tarankov’s body was found in a car parked in a forest. He had a head injury.

However, the law enforcement authorities do not provide details on how Tarankov was killed.

An anonymous source told ERR that Tarankov’s murder didn’t come as a surprise. In his words, the positions of the criminal community leader had weakened recently.  “And someone decided to capitalize on this. Now redistribution of spheres is underway,” the interlocutor added.

Tarankov, who was born in Mogilev city of Belarus, moved to Estonia in 1973.
