YEREVAN. – The U.S. Embassy in Armenia will donate funds to restore Saint Sargis church in Meghri, in the south of Armenia, the US Ambassador to Armenia, Mr Richard Mills, told the media Friday.

The Embassy has a 15-year history of donations aimed to preserve cultural legacy of Armenia.

To lend more expertise to this task, the U.S. Embassy has been partnering with the world-famous Smithsonian Institution.

The new grant support will total 450 thousand USD, thus bringing the total commitment through the years to 935 thousand USD.

The Armenian-based NGO< AMAP Human Development will oversee the works under the project, which will include restoration of the most damaged elements of interior and exterior.

“The funds will be dedicated to restore and preserve St. Sarghis church, a gem of Armenian culture and architecture. This is a very rare and outstanding example of combination of Armenian and Persian styles of design. It houses priceless medieval frescoes.  I have had the experience of visiting it when I was in Meghri last summer. And the U.S. Embassy commissioned some footage of this cultural treasure for those who haven’t yet the chance to travel to Meghri.

This is only one of the several projects undertaken by the US Government to promote cultural heritage and tourism in Armenia.

We’re happy to have supported preservation works of the 10th century Dashtadem fortress, safety and preservation work at the Areni cave. The preservation work for paintings by Hakob Hakobyan and Rafael Antonyan in Gyumri.

This demonstrates the US people’s appreciation of Armenian people’s culture and heritage”, the ambassador said.

He acknowledged the commitment of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia for guidance and support.

Now, the Embassy is collecting proposals for next year’s grant program. This could be a source for very good ideas to promote and preserve the rich historical heritage of Armenia, he said.

He encouraged to follow the details of the call for proposals on the US Embassy’s website and Facebook page.
