YEREVAN. - On the days of the Armenian wine and gata (national pastry) festivals, all the hotels at the distance of dozens of kilometers are full.

Head of the Tourism Department of Economy Ministry of Armenia, Mekhak Apresyan, said the aforementioned to journalists on Friday.

In his words, the festivals of traditional cuisine continue attracting tourists both from Armenia and abroad.  These are festivals of gata, tolma and barbecue held in Khachik village, Sardarapat village and Akhtala town respectively, as well as and the most famous wine festival in Rind and Areni villages (held for already the 8th time).

Apresyan noted that the tour operators include a stop at the festivals in advance if the trip route is passing by.  For instance, the tourists visiting Noravank or Goris in September always stop in Areni. “Guest houses are opening in the same Areni and surrounding villages, the residents getting an opportunity of earning agricultural income. Guests visit them during other seasons as well, but on the festival days no free rooms can be found,” the official said, apparently reacting to the statement of PM Karapetyan, who expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Armenia significantly falls behind neighboring Georgia according to its development rates, having great potential for its development.
