YEREVAN. - The National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia has disclosed a new type of transnational crime, which hadn’t been recorded in Armenia before.

As a result of complex operational-investigative measures, a group of Armenian citizens turned out to have entered into a criminal conspiracy with their accomplices abroad, importing to the country euro banknotes designed for ensuring the encashment and ATM security. The bank notes were withdrawn from legal circulation, being colored with special paints, the NSS press-service informed Armenian News – NEWS.am.

The criminal gang members were going to remove the special paint from the bank notes through chemical processing, give them worn-out look and fraudulently use them in Armenia, concealing the fact of their being withdrawn from legal circulation.

As a result of the preventive actions carried out by the Armenian NSS, the gang members were not able to finalize their criminal intentions, while the banknotes withdrawn from legal turnover were found and seized.

Three persons have been detained in the framework of the launched criminal case. The investigation is taking measures to confirm the identities of the other alleged members of the gang, as well as to disclose other possible cases of using such bank notes in Armenia before.
