YEREVAN. – The new Prime Minister needs to punish severely, perhaps even demonstratively, for corruption, said Gagik Makaryan, Chairman of the “Republican Union of Employers of Armenia” NGO, speaking to reporters, on Monday.

He noted this commenting on Karen Karapetyan’s recent appointment as PM of Armenia, and the prospects for the activities of the new government to be formed.

In Makaryan’s words, the problem is that each and every new PM in Armenia does not fully assume his constitutionally-specified powers, and therefore when the time comes, either the President or the parliament can accuse him of inaction, and he cannot object to this accusation.

“And that’s why the new PM shall require the degree of autonomy that the Constitution gives him,” added the head of the said NGO. “[And] if he doesn’t want [it], it’s not worth getting to work.”

As per Gagik Makaryan, the PM of Armenia should make every effort to uproot corruption in the country.
