YEREVAN. – Azerbaijan became one of the few countries where the age limit is reduced to a minimum for those wishing to hold public office.

Political scientist Aleksandr Markarov, who is Director of CIS Institute Armenian Branch, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am. He noted this reflecting on the results of Monday’s referendum on constitutional amendments in Azerbaijan.

In the analyst’s view, formally, even school graduates can now hold high positions in Azerbaijan.

He added that, but actually, in all likelihood, this refers to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s “handmade” tactics of preparing the future heir of power in the country.

“In fact, he legitimized the transfer of power through [familial] succession,” said Markarov. “His next replacement, in all probability, will be he[, or she] whom Aliyev will appoint to the office of Vice President.”

The initiator of the abovementioned referendum was Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, and, according to preliminary results, it was adopted by a vast majority of votes.

Thirty amendments to the Constitution were put to the vote in this plebiscite. They included the extension of the presidential term of office from five to seven years, the introduction of the institution of vice presidents whom the President himself shall appoint, and the abolition of minimum age limits for presidents and MPs of Azerbaijan.
