YEREVAN. – The safety requirements for the new nuclear power reactor(s) being planned in Armenia have been made in compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) requirements, and the European Union (EU) post-Fukushima standards.

The respective decision was adopted at Thursday’s Cabinet session of the Government of Armenia.

The government plans to close of the currently-operating reactor of the country’s nuclear power plant in 2026, but to build a new one until then.

The construction of this new reactor is planned to get underway by no later than 2018.

And within the framework of a funding agreement with Russia, the lifespan of the operating reactor will be extended for ten years, until 2026.
