The French Senate on Friday passed the bill that criminalizes the denial of Armenian Genocide.

Co-chairman of the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations in France (CCAF), Mourad Papazian, told Armenian News-NEWS.am that the bill on amendments to the Citizenship and Freedom Law was adopted at the French Senate by a vote of 156 for and 146 against.

In his words, even though the Turks were working quite actively to prevent the passing of this bill, they failed to do so.

“This means that the French parliament adopted, once and for all, the bill criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial,” added Papazian. “[But] if there will be a petition, the matter may be discussed also at the Constitutional Council [of France].”

As earlier reported, the French senators on Wednesday started debates regarding the bill on amendments to the Citizenship and Freedom Law. But after midnight, the president of the senate decided to put off the discussions for two days.

Articles 37 and 38 of this bill refer to the criminalization of Armenian Genocide denial.

The discussions were followed by CCAF Co-Chairs Mourad Papazian, and Ara Toranian.

According to Haratch newspaper of the French Armenians, at the time of these debates, however, Senate President Gérard Larcher received Speaker İsmail Kahraman of the Turkish parliament, and this was followed by a dinner reception by the French-Turkish Friendship Group of the Senate.
