Political scientist and former deputy foreign minister of Armenia, Ambassador Arman Navasardyan, believes that the military potential of Armenia and Azerbaijan does not resolve the security issue.

Navasardyan noted that there is nothing new in Azerbaijan’s increasing its military potential and in its military rhetoric.

“Azerbaijan is actively preparing,” said the political scientist. “The president of this country stated that he will not make mutual concessions. He demands the return of territories, and tips—Karabakh. Yes, there is arms parity between Armenia and Azerbaijan. But something remains out of sight.”

The diplomat also stressed that Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s use of strategic arms is fraught with global consequences.

“We [i.e. Armenia] can destroy [Azerbaijan’s capital city of] Baku, but they [i.e. Azerbaijan], too, can do the same with [Armenia’s capital city of] Yerevan,” added Arman Navasardyan. “It is indispensable to prevent this.

“I don’t link our security to military potential; this is not a solution, either for Armenia or Azerbaijan.”
