YEREVAN. – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s statement with respect to Turkey’s possible role in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process was perceived unilaterally.

Political scientist and former deputy foreign minister of Armenia, Ambassador Arman Navasardyan, expressed such a view at a press conference on Wednesday.

Stressing that Turkey’s engagement in the negotiation process is impermissible, Navasardyan recalled that this country cannot become involved also from the perspective of international law, as Armenia will never agree to this.

“Especially since Turkey doesn’t even hide [the fact] that its [respective] approach stems from the interests of Azerbaijan,” added the Armenian diplomat.

In his view, the insinuation of this statement is that Turkey’s activity can be encouraged, but without considering the interests of Azerbaijan, and this causes the resentment by Azerbaijani President Aliyev.

“There are huge concealed disagreements between Azerbaijan and Turkey,’ added Navasardyan. “This [situation] needs to be made use of.”

And speaking about the Lavrov statement’s part that refers to Turkey’s unblocking of its border with Armenia, Arman Navasardyan highlighted: “Well, of course, we can’t endlessly remain enemies with Turkey. And the opening of borders can likewise play an important role.”
