A powerful earthquake with a suspected magnitude of 6.6 has shaken western Japan, NHK reported.

The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami. The Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred in Japan's western prefecture of Tottori, about 700 kilometers west of Tokyo, at a depth of 10 kilometers underground.

As public broadcaster NHK reported, that fire authorities in Tottori have received more than 10 reports of minor injuries. There are some reports of damage to buildings in Tottori and other prefectures.

Nearly 40,000 homes are believed to be left without power as the quake knocked out power lines.
