In 1948, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared October 24, the one-year anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as United Nations Day.

The objective of this decision was to make known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the UN and to gain their support for its work, reported Calend.ru.

In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that this day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

At present, there are 193 UN member states, including Armenia.

United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, which runs from 20 to 26 October.
