Almost 90 percent of Tajikistan's area has remained without electricity. The power outage happened due to an accident, reports the RIA Novosti. According to the preliminary data, there were failures in Nureki hydro power plant, which is situated 100 km east from Dushanbe.

Local people tell that the power outage occurred instantly. Houses, residential facilities, streets, roads, traffic lights, and even the television has been deprived of electricity within a blink of eye.

Some facilities, including hospitals and hotels, switched to autonomous power supplies. There was no warning of widespread disconnection of electricity. Some believe that the power outage may have a connection with closure of Vakhsh river’s channel scheduled for October 29 with a purpose to construct Rogun hydropower plant dam.
