The Armenian delegation to the CE Parliamentary Assembly has not yet decided on its involvement in the PACE subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh, Head of the Armenian delegation to PACE David Harutyunyan told journalists February 1. The delegation members - Naira Zohrabyan (Prosperous Armenia Party) and Armen Melikyan (Republican Party of Armenia) - summed up PACE`s winter session.

David Harutyunyan told journalists about how the subcommittee was set up under Resolution 1416 approved in 2005. He stressed that the subcommittee will bring the progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process to nothing and thwart the process itself. The resolution had always been on the CE agenda and the Armenian delegation had always made efforts to prevent the subcommittee from resuming its activities. After being elected PACE President, Mevlut Cavusoglu made steps to revitalize the subcommittee.

Harutyunyan believes the subcommittee will serve as a platform for recriminations. "Our task is to establish peace between Armenia and Azerbaijani. The subcommittee, however, rules it out," he said.

Harutyunyan has not yet specified his stance on the delegation`s involvement in the subcommittee. At present, the best solution is to suspend its activities until a reasonable way out of the situation has been found. "We are not going to be involved in a body that would affect the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process," Harutyunyan said.

Naira Zohrabyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am that the subcommittee will become a "scene for hand-to-hand fighting and inevitable bombings" if the delegations are involved in it.

Armenian News-NEWS.am reminds readers that at its January 28 sitting the PACE Bureau decided to re-form the subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh. Mr Jordi Xuclа i Costa of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (Spain) was elected subcommittee chairman. However, Naira Zohrabyan reported that the subcommittee members have not yet met the chairman.
