The international community’s aspiration to involve Armenia and Azerbaijan in the European Union and NATO may resolve Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the long-term future, Alexander Rahr, Director of the Russian/Eurasia Program, German Council on Foreign Relations, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, if both countries join one of these international organizations, it will give an opportunity to come to an amicable agreement.

Referring to the possible resumption of military hostilities and violation of status quo, Rahr stressed: “Today there is a small likelihood of war resumption. Status quo is of benefit to all sides, except for Azerbaijan. The international community has sufficient weight to deter from undesirable developments in the region,” the expert noted. According to him, no matter Azerbaijan declares its readiness to seize Nagorno-Karabakh, a military solution is not beneficial to Azerbaijan itself. “The Azerbaijani leadership realizes well that it will scare away foreign investments into Azerbaijan’s economy. It will frustrate Azerbaijan’s plans,” Rahr emphasized. However, he said Azerbaijan will not give up the idea to return Nagorno-Karabakh.
