There are quite a number of similarities between the Nagorno-Karabakh and Cypriot conflicts: wars, bloodshed, tears, refugees and blockade in both cases. However, the principal similarity is the need for ways of resolving the conflicts, Kutlay Erk, who was special envoy of Mehmet Ali Talat, the former President of the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, told journalists in Yerevan, April 4.

Kutlay Erk outlined the similarities between the Nagorno-Karabakh and Cypriot conflicts and stressed that even the hostilities did not put an end to the existence of the Greek or Turkish communities. Therefore, they need peaceful co-existence. Resolution of conflicts requires reconciliation, desire for mutual understanding and confidence-building, Erk said. In the case of Cyprus he stressed the importance of the conflicting parties` willingness to establish contacts, which is, unfortunately, not the case with Nagorno-Karabakh. According to Erk, neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia is showing great willingness to intensify negotiations and establish direct contacts. Each side considers itself an injured party, but the status quo is not the best way out, he said.

Kutlay Erk is in taking part in the roundtable "Establishing peace and peaceful co-existence after an armed conflict - Cyprus and Northern Ireland" in Yerevan. The roundtable has been jointly organized by the Caucasus Institute and International Alert.
