“War Academies Commander Gen. Bilgin Balanlı, who was arrested late on Monday as part of a coup plot probe, was hospitalized on Tuesday at the Gulhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA) over complaints of high blood pressure,” Today’s Zaman reports.

“The Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court ordered his arrest late on Monday and he was sent to the Hasdal Military prison,” the source reads.

“The general’s hospitalization at GATA is reminiscent of earlier cases in which other jailed military officers were also hospitalized soon after their arrests. Many suspects in ongoing coup probes have been hospitalized at GATA, never to return to prison, causing many to wonder whether these individuals could be using health conditions confirmed by GATA as a means of escaping the trial,” the newspaper says.
