YEREVAN. - Russian ban on import from European vegetable market provides additional opportunities for Armenian agriculture and exporters, deputy director of Spayka company Karen Baghdasaryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him Russia imports 5-10 percent of consumed vegetables and now it needs to fill the gap.

Since the ban does not affect South Caucasus region, Spayka company will do its best to pave the way to Russian market.

The primary focus will be on field vegetables- cabbage and potatoes. Baghdasaryan says tomato and cucumber production suffice only to meet domestic demand but Russian ban could largely stimulate activities of greenhouses.

Russia put a ban on vegetable import from the European Union on Thursday. Russia’s chief state sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko announced that the ban will be lifted when Europe identifies the causes of infection and transmission of infection (through water, air, food).
