JSC Atomstroyexport signed confidentiality agreement with Armenia on the construction of new nuclear power plant (NPP) in Armenia, reports RIA Novosti.

“This document is one of most important and necessary parts of the procedure, because after its endorsement, we are free to exchange essential documentation and correspondence on an entirely different level,” said senior Vice-President of JSC Atomstroyexport Alexander Dubov.

Earlier, Atomstroyexport and Armenian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources could only exchange information that was public, explained Dubov.

Armenian Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Areg Galstyan said that additional seismic research of the new NPP area has been done.

"I do not expect major changes in the project. We have previously conducted studies and increased security requirements,” stressed Galstyan.

The only NPP in the South Caucasus region belongs to Armenia and ensures around 40 percent of country’s electricity generation. The closure of Armenian NPP is scheduled for 2016. Armenian authorities plan to install a new NPP to replace the existing one. So far the sides are negotiating around one generating unit with a capacity of 1000MWe. According to Armenian Ministry of Energy, the project will cost around $5 billion.
