BAKU. - Azerbaijani “Azadlig” newspaper published an article, presenting Azerbaijan’s “achievements” within the recent 20 years.

“We will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence in 2 months. Many were sure that our country will become the most developed and richest country in the region. Our natural resources and potential gave reasons to think so. However, 20 years later, we see these hopes drowned and we missed the previous opportunities,” the newspaper reads.

The newspaper refers to Aliyev’s policy, noting petrodollars are mostly wasted and out of place. For example, there more than 100 museums, monuments and cultural centers dedicated to Heydar Aliyev in Azerbaijan for uncertain reasons. According to various sources, billions of manats were spent on these centers. But that is not all, as the Azerbaijani authorities go on spending huge sums on building monuments glorifying Azerbaijani incumbent president’s father.

However, Azerbaijan got into this situation after it gained independence and Heydar Aliyev appeared on the political stage, the newspaper reports, adding oil money could be spent on the country’s development, for  instance on construction of schools. According to official statistics, due to a shortage of buildings, 50% of Azerbaijani students are forced to go to school in the second or the third shift.

“As a result, today Azerbaijan has been included in the list of authoritarian petrostates in the Middle East due to the country’s political regime,” the newspaper says.
