European Union follows closely the trial of Armenian political activist of Javakhk (Armenian populated region of Georgia) Vahagn Chakhalyan, reads the follow-up letter by EU Commissioner responsible for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner to European MP Sylvie Guillaume.

September 15, Sylvie Guillaume sent a letter to EU Commissioner with a request to devote attention to the trial of Armenian political activist Vahagn Chakhalyan. In response Ferrero-Waldner informed that EU heeds the trial through its Georgian Representative.

April 7, Chakhalyan was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Akhaltsikhe Court of First Instance. His father, Ruben Chakhalyan was fined for 5000 Lari (about U.S. $3000) and his brother — for 2000 Lari (about U.S. $1200). Many organizations insist that Chakhalyans are chased for their political views.
