BAKU. – At 1/8 finals of AIBA World Boxing Championships 2011, being held in Baku, Azerbaijan—which serve as the first international Olympic qualifier for the London Olympics—Armenian national team’s former world silver medalist, world cup holder, and European champion Andranik Hakobyan (75 kg) on Tuesday entered the ring against Mexican Juan Mercado, recorded his second victory at the tournament, and thus qualified for the London Olympics. 

At the end of the first two rounds of the bout, Hakobyan was ahead in score sheets, but Mercado had to retire in the third round because of an injury to his right eye, and the win was awarded to Hakobyan.

Andranik Hakobyan’s quarter-final match is on Wednesday morning.
