Today’s Google doodle marks the 125th anniversary of Mexican painter Diego Rivera.

Rivera was born on December 8, 1886 in north-west of Mexico, in the city of Guanajuato. Rivera studied art at the in Mexico City, then continued his education in Spain and France.

In Paris he got under the influence of classic European art and modernism, in particular cubism. However, Rivera worked out his own style – mixture of modern trends with traditional Mexican genres.

In 1922 he joined the Mexican Communist Party and visited the USSR in 1927.

He was a close friend of Soviet politician, founder of the Red Army Leon Trotsky who lived with the painters when he was exiled in Mexico.

Diego Rivera was married to famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
