YEREVAN. - Armenian State Revenue Committee (SRC) officers exposed, towards the end of the year past, a huge smuggling of illegal drugs at Meghri Customs, and, according to Vahram Guroghlyan, the Pre-release Control Department Chief, this was an unprecedented incident.       

“On December 29, 2011, at 2 a.m., the Meghri Customs staff inspected the baggage belonging to Iranian citizen Said Milani, and 11.2-kg narcotics were found in the secret compartment of the suitcase,” Guroghlyan informed. A criminal case is launched, and Milani is detained, SRC informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The illegal drugs are primarily smuggled in through the Armenian-Iranian border, at Meghri Customs. More than ten such cases were recorded in 2011 alone,” Vahram Guroghlyan noted.    

Incidentally, three more Iranian citizens had previously tried to smuggle in large quantities of narcotics, and two attempts were made at smuggling in narcotics and psychotropic drugs. “Also, many cases were recorded when narcotics were concealed inside the body,” Armenia’s Pre-release Control Department Chief informed.    

To note, in 2011 the aforesaid Department recorded around 500 violations of the customs rules, and 413 violations of the customs control deadline.
