YEREVAN-From early morning Armenians are expressing their gratitude for the adoption of the bill criminalizing denial of genocides by putting flowers in front of the French Embassy building, says the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.

Young people have gathered near the embassy in center of Yerevan to express their gratitude.

Among the gathered are also representatives of ruling Republican Party’s youth branch and ‘Together’ youth movement.

They are shouting ‘merci’ (thanks) carrying posters reading ‘Thank you France’, ‘France is our friend’ and holding the flags of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The young people also put gratitude letters in the embassy’s mail box.

The French Ambassador in Armenia Henri Renaud came out to greet the young people and thank for the attention when an elderly woman walked towards him. Tears in her eyes, she thanked and embraced the ambassador.

Later the group was joined by representatives of youth branch of ARF Dashnaktsutyun. They expressed their gratitude and stressed Armenian Cause’s (Hay Dat) contribution to the adoption of the bill. The ARF Dashnaktsutyun members besides carrying Armenia’s and their party’s flags were also carrying the French flag and a photo of the bill’s author Valerie Boyer.

The gathered announced that such events show we are united in recognition of the Armenian Genocide and this will be an impulse for other countries to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

To note, with a vote of 127 in favor and 86 against, France’s Senate passed Monday the bill that criminalizes the denial of the genocides which this country has formally recognized. And these are the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust.

This bill sets a one-year prison sentence plus a 45-thousand-Euro fine for anyone who denies these genocides. According to the regulations, the French President will ratify it within fifteen days. And Turkey had announced earlier that if the bill were to pass, it will impose a number of sanctions against France.
