US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is preparing for a historic diplomatic meeting that could change the course of the war in the Middle East. Direct talks between the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon will take place in Washington today, Axios reports.

Axios emphasizes that such direct talks between these two neighbors have not taken place since 1993. However, the constant destruction of Hezbollah militants by Israel in Lebanon forces the talks, and US President Donald Trump may influence their early start.

According to Axios’ sources, there will be three main issues on the agenda: an immediate ceasefire and cessation of the ground invasion, long-term disarmament of the Hezbollah, and the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement between the two countries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long rejected any possibility of direct dialogue with the Lebanese government.

Donald Trump is demanding immediate de-escalation and wants quick results. It was after a conversation with the US president that Netanyahu agreed to the first step in the peace process, Axios adds.
