YEREVAN.- If the completely proportional election system is introduced, only Yerevan residents will be elected, said Vice Speaker of Armenian Parliament Samvel Balasanyan.

The parliament held debates on Tuesday on shifting to the completely proportional election system. The bill was submitted on the demand of opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage Party, with the support of the non-parliament opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).

“There are a few candidates from the regions in the proportional election lists,” he stressed.

Balasanyan also called to hold back from voicing accusations against single-mandate deputies.

“Our party [Prosperous Armenia] is striving to shift to 100%-proportional system but this task is premature. Presently, the plurality election system is the best option,” he added.
