YEREVAN. – Over 60 percent of regional population does not know their regional MP, head of oppositional Heritage party parliament group Stepan Safaryan announced in the parliament on Tuesday citing the results of survey conducted by the Armenian organization NDI (National Democracy Institute).

To note, on the initiative of Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun parties a discussion on the bill about moving to 100 per cent proportional system took place on the Armenian parliament. The ruling Republican Party of Armenia supports the current system (90 proportional + 41 majoritarian MPs).

“Most of the citizens in the regions do not know their MPs,” the head of Heritage parliament group said.

Another Heritage MP Armen Martiroyan pointed out that the 41 majoritarian districts are a good backup for the government during the elections. If those districts did not exist, the oligarchs from those districts would not be able to provide votes for the ruling authorities.
