YEREVAN.- The Republican Party of Armenia has will to win under any election system and has proved it during the Yerevan mayoral election, MP Eduard Sharmazanov said.

The parliament is holding debates on shifting to the completely proportional election system - the initiative proposed by the opposition.

“Mayoral elections were held on proportional lists – this is offered by the opposition. The Republican Party won again,” he said during the debate.

Deputy Speaker Sharmazanov also stressed that single-mandate MPs play an important role in development of the constituencies they are presenting.

“I absolutely agree that our main task is to hold fair elections, but the existing system cannot hamper it.  No one is more interested in democratic elections than the Armenian authorities are,” he said.
