YEREVAN. – The armed forces will not be used for political reasons, Armenian Minister of Justice Hrair Tovmasyan announced in the parliament on Wednesday commenting on the bill about ‘the legal regime of emergency situations’.

According to the bill, the armed forces should be included in protecting critical facilities, neutralizing illegal armed groups, providing security for life and property.

ARF Dashnaktstyun member Artsvik Minasyan, who had come up with a speech before the minister, mentioned that the current constitution already provides legal basis for military involvement in the internal affairs during war time. The new bill is copying the already existing one, which does not make sense, he added.

The minster stressed that the army will only interfere in the cases mentioned in the bill - for keeping the Constitutional order and in case of attempts towards seizure of powers.

“If speaking metaphorically, one can cut bread and kill people with the same knife. We announce that if we give that knife we give it for cutting bread. Thus, armed forces will not be used for solving political issues. I swear on my honor that the armed forces will not be used for political purposes,” the minister announced.
