March 14, 2012 marks the 101st birth and 7th death anniversaries of Akira Yoshizawa, the master of the art of origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.

Thanks to Yoshizawa, origami became very popular throughout the world in the 20th century. The master invented conventional selections for paper folding diagrams, and the world began to learn origami by way of Yoshizawa’s drawings.

And on the occasion of Akira Yoshizawa’s birth and death anniversaries, Google prepared a special homepage doodle comprising letters created by the origami technique.

Akira Yoshizawa passed away on March 14, 2005, that is, on his 94th birthday.
